In the contemporary job market dynamics, many aspects are to be considered before deciding the career field you could want your children to enter.
However, many parents do not give insight to their children on job opportunities that would guarantee a wider job market for the youngsters.
In response to the gaps the children are experiencing, several professionals who’ve been succeeding in their careers have taken it upon themselves to nurture the young minds through empowerment and motivational sessions.
At Kisii School recently, Dr. Alice Nyamweya and Dr. Rose Otieno took the Form Four students through a mentorship session to offer them insights about the current job markets and how to suit the current job market demands.
Dr. Nyamweya, a medical doctor by profession, is an entrepreneur managing KEMA East Africa, a Personal Protective Equipment-selling company, and Dr. Otieno, a Counseling Psychologist and Lecturer at Kisii University, students mentors from the university, and teachers attended the event.
A career
Dr. Otieno urges that a career need to be chosen carefully so that you may not end up in a career that you did not intend to be in.

“Career choices are life-long decisions; choose careers that offer you an opportunity to grow and develop,” advised Dr. Otieno.
Dr. Nyamweya, on the other hand, insisted that young people should know their personality and why they want a given career, and their motivations toward those career paths.
She adds that a career has to be all-round in that it makes them happy and meets their demands because happiness in a career is intertwined with productivity and support towards your life.
Dr. Nyamweya urged the students to work hard in their studies and make it to the next level.
She reminded them that commitment is vital and that they must avoid panic as it paralyzes their competence and focus.
Learn from professionals
As a student, understanding your desired career is key to a successful profession.
“When choosing a career, always know what it entails, learn from experienced professionals, and have mentors from those fields.
The mentors will expose you to the dynamics of those careers and prepare you psychologically before you get to those careers,” Dr. Nyamweya advised.

She also adds that students should not be biased on career matters, as this may render them jobless for longer periods.
She encouraged students to diversify their minds to accommodate any career that might pop up as it’s a contemporary world.
Dr. Otieno highlighted a few things to consider while choosing a career path, saying:
Parental guidance: “Always involve your parents in the process of choosing a career, this is because most of the parents have been in that stage and have experience and help you make good and worthy choices for the future,” she urged.
Interest: Knowing what you are interested in will help you land a career path that best serves you, and that makes the best use of you.
Passion: Knowing where your passion lies helps you choose a career that you love and give you extra motivation.
Life goals: Understanding what you want to achieve with that career is important. This will help you choose a career that will help you achieve those life goals.

Talent and strength: As a student, you should know your talents and identify your strongholds such that you choose a career that will suit you in terms of what you are good at and what you are talented at.
Guaranteed job opportunities: Always try to study the job markets and find out what jobs are currently available and which ones guarantee a spot. Also, look at which jobs will always open avenues for employment and personal development.
Personality: Life skills should not be ignored here; one should assess their life skills and identify the career fields that best suit them.
Success and mindset
The mindset of an individual is what determines success or failure in their careers.
Dr. Otieno urged the students to always have a positive mindset and always and examine their current notions about careers and adjust if they are not the best.
“Brand yourself with success, and make yourself known by your accomplishments.

A positive mind is a mind that is geared toward growth. Appreciate yourself for the little achievements you make every day,” advised Dr. Otieno.
Support systems are vital in careers; these are the people you can talk to when you are struggling with career challenges.
In your profession of choice, speaking for yourself is important because it makes your ideas heard and involved in the engagements of the entity.
Dr. Nyamweya advised the young scholars to always take opportunities, for they may link them to other opportunities.
“There is always a need to surround yourself with positive friends; they will add value and make you develop your small success into bigger success,” she said.
Time and practice
Matilda Nzioki, a counseling psychology student, Daisy Shaviya medicine and surgery student, and Elijah Muriithi, a nursing student, also gave their motivational sentiments to the students.

Mr. Muriithi reminded the students that they are in a national school that serves the best students with the best resources and facilities.
According to him, time and practice make the difference.
He encouraged students to work hard and land careers in the School of Health Sciences.
“Persistence and working hard are all that matter in your journey to success,” Ms. Nzioki encouraged.
She also reminded the students of the importance of maintaining healthy mental health.

She encouraged them to always seek help in case of mental health struggles.
From the School of Health Sciences, Ms. Shaviya encouraged the students to always take up chances whenever they pop up.
“Fight the fear of failure; fearing to fail is disastrous. Always stand out as an individual. Start building from where you have failed and work with focus towards your success,” Ms. Shaviya urged.
She also reminded the students that the medical field is vast and a lot of careers are available in the field, in the country, and abroad.

Why get it right
Ms. Shaviya reminded the learners to build their character, for papers take people places, but character sticks them there.
