  • Isolated, Michael refuses to be defined by the circumstances of his birth. He dreams of a life beyond the confines of poverty, a life where education is not just a luxury, but a birthright.
  • Nina Meyerhof’s unwavering dedication to peace has been honoured with a multitude of prestigious awards. Among them are the Mother Teresa Award.
  • During her charity mission in Kenya in April 2024, Meyerhof emphasised the crucial role of leaders at all levels in protecting lives and fostering peace globally.

Michael is no ordinary child; he is a total orphan. With neither the guiding hand of a parent nor the comforting embrace of peers, he navigates the treacherous path of childhood alone, with no decent clothing to call his.

Every day break, he awakens to the call of duty, knowing that the day ahead will be fraught with challenges that would crush even the sturdiest of spirits.

With a smile that could light up even the darkest corners of his existence, the fourth-grade learner, in Homa Bay County, Kenya, embarks on a journey that transcends the mere pursuit of education.

For behind that bright façade lies a mat woven with reeds of struggle, hunger, and the stark realities of poverty.

As he makes his way to school, every morning, his mind is consumed not by the joys of learning, but by the gnawing ache of hunger that threatens to overshadow his every thought.

He is no stranger to the pangs of an empty stomach, for this is a reality he faces each day with stoic resignation.

The promise of a warm bowl of porridge, lovingly prepared by his 70-year-old grandmother, is a source of strength, in an otherwise bleak existence.

And so, with each passing hour, he counts down the minutes until he can return home for his much-needed reprieve.

Isolated, Michael refuses to be defined by the circumstances of his birth. He dreams of a life beyond the confines of poverty, a life where education is not just a luxury, but a birthright.

He not only prays to be like other children, but also to secure a decent future, where hope and joy dwell.

And so, he presses on, his footsteps echoing the rhythm of his unwavering determination to defy the odds stacked against him.

Cycle of Poverty

Michael is not alone, as an alarming trend has emerged where children are becoming victims of painful experiences as they navigate their daily lives. Poverty rates are soaring, and mortality rates are rising, leaving many with nothing to cling on.

Unable to see a future in education, school-going children are losing hope and turning to activities like sand harvesting, fishing, or the motorcycle industry commonly known as bodaboda. These ventures are not only risky but also rob them of their childhood pride and education.

This situation calls for urgent attention from authorities and organisations to address the root causes of poverty in these communities and provide support systems for the vulnerable children. Without intervention, the cycle of despair and exploitation will only continue to perpetuate.

Children of the Earth

It is this unending pain, struggle and despair that informed the establishment of Children of the Earth (COE) in 1990.

Coming up as a calling to bring sense and order to the world, Dr. Nina Meyerhof, Founder and President of Children of the Earth (COE), says in the eyes of the world, Michael may be just another face in the crowd, another statistic in a sea of despair.

She adds that to those who know Michael, who have witnessed the indomitable spirit that burns within his soul, he is a holder of light in a world shrouded in darkness.

In an exclusive interview with the Scholar Media Africa, in Homa Bay Town, Dr. Meyerhof shared her feelings in nurturing individual authentic expression, and inspiring individual acts of kindness and social action projects.

“We must do something for the world, by creating a safe environment where children believe in each other. Children of the Earth offers good life by creating opportunities, and inspiring purpose in life,” Dr. Meyerhof says.

During her charity mission in Kenya in April 2024, Dr. Meyerhof emphasised the crucial role of leaders at all levels in protecting lives and fostering peace globally. She stressed that meaningful development relies on coexistence and embracing a culture of unity.

“In my commitment to empowering underprivileged children and creating a nurturing environment for their growth and development, I am dedicated to providing quality education and essential resources to all children.

We foster spirituality through conscious leadership. As a community, we believe in dialogue in order to address the troubles of the world, and the youth must be trained through capacity building, workshops and seminars to understand this dimension,” she says.

Hope for Homa Bay

And at Dr. Nina Meyerhof Educational Centre and School, Dr. Meyerhof wowed learners with her message of positivity and resilience.

With unwavering passion, she urged them to see beyond their circumstances and live a life filled with purpose.

“COE inspires young people to become agents of positive change, fostering a sense of global unity and compassion. We empower individuals to make a tangible difference in the world,” she said.

During the visit, she donated 3 new computers and 4 laptops, and urged the school management to encourage practical learning.

She highlighted the importance of education and reverence for God as crucial tools for empowerment in today’s society.

Dedicated to the building of a better future, COE delivers programs which provide young people with the empowerment and leadership skills necessary to advance peace in the world today, and in the future.

The globally recognised organisation promotes international cooperation, multicultural understanding, spiritual values, and ethical living skills.

Fuelled by Kenya’s staggering poverty rates and the insatiable thirst for knowledge among its children, Dr. Meyerhof’s visit underscored her unwavering dedication to renewing hope in the face of adversity.

Building a Better Future

Through her generous donations and educational support, she endeavours to unlock the full potential of every child, irrespective of their societal standing.

Her visit was more than just a gesture of goodwill; it was a catalyst for transformation. Sharing her vision of a world united in kindness and understanding, she left an indelible mark on the hearts of Kenyan children, igniting a flame of hope that will continue to burn brightly for generations to come.

She has dedicated her life to advocating for children, spearheading initiatives that inspire, connect, and empower young minds for peace building efforts globally.

And speaking at St Peters DC Mixed Secondary School in Homa Bay County, Princess, her daughter, reminded students of their duty to live with purpose, and to never run away from their solemn calling.

“We must all remain committed to listening to the inner voice, and none of us should lose our focus,” Princess affirmed. “For COE, it is a humble calling to empower young minds like yours to drive positive change.”

During the visit, Dr. Meyerhof engaged directly with students, urging them to pursue their dreams and seize opportunities for personal growth. Her presence underscored the pivotal role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering hope.

Selfless Sacrifice

She pledged a volunteer teacher from the United States in January next year to support the students, and committed to assist the school, to ensure every child’s potential is unlocked.

The students who were energised by her message, vowed to make a difference in their lives and communities.

Dr. Meyerhof’s visit served as a reminder of the transformative power of education and compassion in creating a better world for all.

Caroline Olwal, Principal St. Peters DC Mixed Secondary School, commended Dr. Meyerhof for her selfless sacrifice and unwavering support for those in need.

Ms Olwal called upon the students to emulate Dr. Meyerhof’s actions, emphasizing the positive impact they can have on their villages.

“Dr. Nina has a golden heart, she is not any other person, and she has traveled the world and seen firsthand the pain and suffering of children across the globe,” she remarked.

The principal applauded Dr. Meyerhof’s charitable efforts in reaching out to the less fortunate in the society. She emphasized that kindness and generosity should be embraced with honesty, love and objectivity.

“Dr. Nina’s initiative to encourage and support the less fortunate is commendable. We must learn to appreciate and support these gestures of compassion,” she added.

She urged communities to recognise the value of altruism and generosity, emphasizing that appreciating good deeds fosters a culture of kindness and empathy.
