Officer encourages residents to embrace adult education

Kitui County Adult and Continuing Education Office has registered 91 candidates for the 2021 Teacher Certificate of Adult Education (TCAE) examination.

This is according to the County Adult and Continuing Education Officer (CACEO), Mr. Stanley Kihara.

The officer disclosed that the 91 include women and 20 men.

The office will be the examination centre for six counties.

The counties are Kitui, Garissa, Machakos, Wajir, Mandera and Makueni.

Kihara who was briefing the media in his office said: “This year’s rise in the registration is as a result of more sensitisation through the media, advocacy and seminars among others.”

He said that the COVID-19 health crisis greatly affected the adult education programme last year.

The programme was started by the government in 1978. 

The county has18 Sub-County Adult and Continuing Education Officers (SCACEOs).

“We have enough teachers for the secondary section students posted by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to the centre,” Kihara said.

He encouraged the community to make use of the centre to improve their education.

Currently the centre has nine community learning resource centres (CLRCs).

They include Itoleka in Kitui Central Sub-County, Kyusyani (Lower Yatta Sub-County), Muselele (Lower Yatta Sub-County), Maito (Lower Yatta Sub-County),  and Imwamba (Mwingi East Sub-County).

Others are Itoloni (Mwingi West Sub-County), Kathiani (Kitui West Sub-County), Itusya (Mutitu Sub-County) and Syokithumbi (Matinyani Sub-County).

Kihara disclosed that the County has 5,258 adult learners who are 4,228 females and 1,030 males.

He also disclosed that currently the county has 198 instructors.

“The county’s current number of the basic literacy learners is 3,256,” he said.

The official said that the county has 1,515 post-literacy learners who are 1,177 females and 338 men.

Adult and continuing education primary  programme learners are 58 (35 females and 23 male), according to him.

He disclosed that the number adult and continuing education secondary programme learners are 429 (242 females and 187 male).
