Zetech University held its 7th pompous graduation ceremony on Friday, November 10, 2023, at the Technology Park, Mang’u Campus.

Since its first graduation in 2017, the institution was graduating its first cohort of Master’s degree program students.

The ceremony saw four students of Zetech University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree students conferred degrees and capped the university’s celebration of 25 Years of Academic Excellence.

The university had its inaugural Ph.D. program approved by the Commission for University Education (CUE) in October and is set to commence in January 2024.

Research, community engagement

With a population of approximately 6000 students, Zetech University has a robust student culture where students engage in activities such as music and drama festivals, among others.

Prof. Alice Njuguna, Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Academics, Research and Student Affairs, stated that the university’s mandate is to ensure that they co-exist with the community while engaging them in different spectrums of life.

“The three functions of a University are teaching, research and community engagement. We are here to do research that informs policies that affect the general community,” said Prof. Njuguna.

Additionally, she stated that as a University, they believe in changing the way communities operate.

“When we moved here at Witeithie, we were the first university around this area and we found it important to ensure the university engaged with the community so that they can feel like they are a part of us and be able to change how they live,” she added.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Njenga Munene, congratulated the graduands for the courage to face university education.

“Your mental fortitude to withstand social pressures and your empathy has allowed you to have positive relationships with your colleagues and lecturers. You had the rigor to read, do your assignments and sit your examinations,” said the VC.

He urged them not only to put their knowledge and skills for private benefits but also for the benefit of the society at large to advance the general public good so that all people may live decent, fulfilling and productive lives.

“The reason we are commissioning you to the world today is to put your knowledge and expertise to the world. Be true to that,” advised Prof. Njenga.

This graduation marks 25 years of scholarly excellence for Zetech University, which has kept the vision of innovation alive.

The institution now has four campuses: Thika Road Campus Ruiru, Technology Park Mang’u Campus, Nairobi City Campus, and Zetech University Digital Campus (ODeL).

Technological institution

According to Prof. Njenga, the university has been one of the leading teams in innovation this year.

The Ecomobilas’ electric motorbike was innovated by one of the professors from the institution. He converts petrol motorbikes to electric motorbikes.

“The project has received very wide coverage and it’s possible to now change all the loss bodabodas make to productive bikes again,” the VC said in his speech during the graduation ceremony.

He further noted that Zetech University also led a team in Singapore for the global robotics competition.

Prof. Munene notes that Zetech’s fifth Research and Innovation Week was held in July, where many innovation cases were presented.

“The academic division launched the Zetech University Journal of Technology and Business and we urge people to submit their papers in these areas for publication,” said the Vice Chancellor.

Additionally, he disclosed that the university has initiated an international academic engagement for students, where 50 of them have already registered to attend the Asian Silicon Valley in Bangalore, India.

Ms. Murage was the Chief Guest and, with 15 years in IT, lauded the efforts put by Zetech University in ensuring they are at the forefront of the conversation on revolutionizing education through Artificial Intelligence.

In her motivational speech to the graduating class, Murage noted that education is more than learning facts.

She stated that education shapes who one becomes and that is a genuine indicator for success.

“To the graduating class of 2023, as you stand on the threshold of a new chapter in your life, remember that education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but rather about adopting a growth mindset,” she noted.

Speaking of the graduation’s theme, Revolutionizing education through AI, Murage noted that AI is indeed revolutionizing many sectors of the economy, including education, and igniting minds in numerous ways.

“We have a huge opportunity as Kenyans to participate in this revolution,” she commented.

Murage equally appealed to corporate leadership to not only mentor but also give job opportunities to fresh graduates.

“Our companies must adapt to new ways of working, not only by adopting new technologies but also by listening to the wishes of the younger generation and continuously training them to join our teams.

Technological breakthroughs are transforming our companies, changing the way we produce, and disrupting our organizations, and young minds are at the forefront of this revolution,” she appealed.

The Chief Guest also warned the students about the kind of networks and relationships they take up in life, saying that they greatly influence their success in the future.

“We become the five people that we spend most of our time with; they will influence your thoughts, conversations and personality in the long run,” she concluded.
