Roosevelt Williams III, a native San Diego with over 35 years of experience living and working in his beloved community, is on a mission to uplift the overlooked and underserved in the society.
His work through Young Black & N’ Business (YB&NB), a community organisation he founded and now leads as CEO and president, embodies his passion for service and a belief in hard work, discipline, and industry.
“My grandfather is the reason I am here today,” Roosevelt Williams III reflects on the profound influence his grandfather had on his life, crediting him as the cornerstone of his success, asserting the invaluable mentorship and sacrifices that shaped his journey.
From a young age, he learned the importance of core life values, including the responsibility to serve others.
“He instilled in me the belief that uplifting the downtrodden and giving a voice to the voiceless are not just noble pursuits but essential life missions,” he adds.
Now, as he opens up about his own life, he is candid about his dedication to helping others succeed. Every effort he makes is aimed at empowering those around him.
Williams believes that true fulfilment comes from seeing others thrive in their own pursuits.
Roots In Community
For Williams, San Diego is more than just home; it’s a community rich in culture and beauty, one he deeply cherishes. From palm trees to sea breezes, he sees the city as a place full of potential and promise.
“My journey as a small business owner and community leader is grounded in this love for my surroundings and the people who inhabit it,” Williams confidently says.
His mission is clear: to provide tangible solutions to the everyday struggles faced by underserved communities. His leadership philosophy is driven by a core belief in building up individuals and creating opportunities that have a lasting impact.
From chess games with family in his free time to his work in community advocacy, his life revolves around providing value and growth for others.
Building Platform For The Overlooked
Founded in 2018, YB&NB is dedicated to motivating and empowering communities that are often overworked and underserved.
“Through this platform, I strive to help individuals break free from systemic marginalisation and release the mental shackles that hold them back. My aim is to build a ladder of upward mobility for my community, one that goes beyond physical escape and addresses the mindset needed to overcome challenges,” he explains.
Under his leadership, YB&NB has become a cornerstone of the San Diego community. The organisation has hosted quarterly networking mixers, business acumen clinics, and public speaking courses, all designed to provide critical resources for aspiring entrepreneurs.
These events give early entrepreneurs access to real-world knowledge and create pathways for success. Through YB&NB’s efforts, entrepreneurs are exposed to high-value opportunities that help them build professional networks and refine their skills.
The digital age has not been lost on Williams’ vision for YB&NB. The organisation has embraced technology, offering digital magazines, virtual release parties, and a bi-weekly newsletter to keep their growing audience informed and engaged.
“Through social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook, YB&NB connects with entrepreneurs across the nation, providing inspiration and practical advice for the next generation of leaders,” he adds.
Creating Legacy
The impact has been felt throughout the community, thanks to its many events and initiatives. He has overseen the organisation of three festivals, including the much-loved Soulful Christmas, where over 2,000 toys were distributed to local youth in need.
This event has become a symbol of hope for many families and an example of how Williams integrates his passion for service with his community work.
But he doesn’t stop at events. He’s also focused on fostering professional development.
YB&NB offers courses on public speaking, consulting, and event planning, empowering individuals with the skills they need to excel in the business world. This comprehensive approach ensures that the people Williams serves are not only motivated but also equipped to achieve long-term success.
A key highlight of Williams’ tenure has been the creation of the Black Faces in High Places poster, now going into its fourth year. This initiative recognises community pillars and industry leaders within San Diego, celebrating their contributions and achievements.
It serves as both a testament to those making an impact and an inspiration to future leaders.
Responding to Crisis
The global pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, but Williams and the organisation were quick to step up. In 2021, the organisation held multiple free PPE and food drives to support those hit hardest by COVID-19.
They also held live Zoom trainings to keep the community informed and engaged. These workshops included STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) workshops and Tech Talk discussions on transitioning businesses from “brick and mortar to click and order.”
YB&NB also contributed to the Census awareness campaign, ensuring that underserved populations were accurately represented.
“These efforts underscored Williams’ commitment to not only reacting to immediate community needs but also planning for a better future,” Williams says.
Advocacy for Systemic Change
Williams has long been involved in policy work aimed at improving the lives of San Diego’s low- to moderate-income communities. His advocacy has led to the creation of policies and ordinances designed to foster equal opportunity and environmental justice.
“One of my most notable achievements is drafting the Responsible Banking Ordinance in 2008, which sought to eliminate redlining practices by major banks. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the San Diego City Council, marking a significant victory for the underserved populations in the city,” he confirms.
Between 2009 and 2012, he served as the lead consultant for the Reinvestment Task Force Board of San Diego’s Fourth Council District.
During this time, he also acted as a liaison for the San Diego Youth Commission, working with 18 different communities to provide leadership and consulting services.
In 2011, Williams’ contributions were further recognised when he was inducted into the Wall of Excellence on Imperial Avenue and Willie James Jones Avenue in San Diego. This honour reflected his deep ties to the community and the lasting impact of his work.
Accolades and Achievements
Williams’ dedication to service and leadership has not gone unnoticed. Over the years, he has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions.
Among his notable achievements are winning the NAACP Image Award in 2023, receiving the Joel Anderson Community Hero Award in 2023, and being named the Face of Black-Owned Business & Community Service by Local Umbrella Media in 2024.
“In 2024, I received the prestigious President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition that reflects my decades-long commitment to community service. My work has also earned me the BLU LAPIS Media Top Leader of the Year award and a feature on the front page of the San Diego Weekly,” he clarifies.
Williams’ love for his community extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He has had the honour of ringing the San Diego Padres ceremonial bell in tribute to Tony Gwynn, a local sports legend.
In addition, he has been a recipient of the KOGO-AM 600 Radio George Chamberlin Award in 2024, further solidifying his place as a community leader.
A Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship
One of Williams’ personal goals is to remain a lifelong learner and a man of noble character. He attributes much of his success to the mentorship he received from city officials, dignitaries, and industry leaders.
