Perched on a raised location about a kilometre from the main road in Nsicha village, Kiabonyoru ward, off Kebirigo-Ikonge Road in Nyamira County, Borabu Technical Training Institute is fast establishing itself as a regional powerhouse in engineering and technical education. Since opening its doors in 2018 with just 50 pioneer learners, the institute has grown exponentially, now educating over 1,500 students across multiple technical and vocational disciplines.
A Journey of Growth and Excellence
The five-acre campus, generously donated by Nsicha Primary School, was initially mentored by Kisii National Polytechnic (KNP) to ensure stability before the institute began managing its operations independently.
Dr. Were Momanyi, the institute’s Principal, attributes its remarkable growth to the government’s commitment to sponsor students placed via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS), as well as a supportive board and administrative team.
“Our institution is a centre of excellence for electrical and electronic engineering, equipped with all the facilities required to train students in this field,” says Dr. Were.
Over the years, Borabu TTI has expanded its offerings, registering six additional departments and more than 15 courses to meet the rising demand for technical education.
Comprehensive Course Offerings
The institute now offers courses at levels four, five, and six across the following departments:
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Information and Informatics
- Building and Civil Engineering
- Fashion Design and Cosmetology
- Cooperative Management
- Supply Chain Management
- Secretarial Studies
Among these, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) program has attracted the highest enrolment, reflecting the growing demand for tech-savvy professionals. Borabu TTI plans to surpass its current population of 1,500 learners to reach 2,500 by the end of next year.
“We have put everything in place, including strategic advertising and stakeholder engagement, to achieve this target,” Dr. Were adds.
Practical Skills for a Dynamic Job Market
Dr. Were emphasizes the importance of trainee-friendly courses that equip learners with practical skills for immediate employment or entrepreneurship. Programs like Building and Civil Engineering and Plumbing are particularly popular because they combine hands-on training with strong employment prospects.
“Our students understand the dynamics of the job market in Kenya. Personal employment through technical skills is essential, as the country needs qualified professionals in various sectors. These courses are not only well-paying but also allow learners to become self-reliant,” he explains.
The government’s financial support further boosts accessibility. Students placed via KUCCPS receive 75 percent of their school fees covered, while the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) offers additional support, making education affordable and inclusive.
Driving Community Development
Borabu TTI’s growth has positively impacted the surrounding community. The influx of students has prompted local residents to develop private hostels, creating economic opportunities and fostering a strong relationship between the institution and the community.
“We consult regularly with administration officers to ensure both student welfare and community peace are maintained,” Dr. Were notes.
Accessibility and Co-Curricular Excellence
The institute benefits from its strategic location, about a kilometre from the Kisii-Kericho Highway, providing easy access for students. Beyond academics, Borabu TTI actively promotes co-curricular activities, with students excelling in soccer, music, and trade fairs. Notably, the college achieved top honors in the 2024 Music and Drama Festival with a Giriama dance presentation, earning a chance to showcase it at Eldoret State Lodge.
“Participation in co-curricular activities is crucial for the holistic development of our students,” Dr. Were emphasizes.
Partnerships and Student Support
Mr. Antony Maangi, the Deputy Principal for Academics, highlights the institute’s partnerships with other organizations for industrial attachments and practical training, a cornerstone of technical education. Additionally, guidance and counselling services ensure students’ mental well-being and psychosocial support.
The institute continues to address infrastructural challenges posed by rapid growth.
“We aim to expand our facilities with the help of government and partners to meet the increasing demand for technical education,” says Mr. Maangi.
