Police in Borabu Sub County are investigating a fire incident that razed down a three storey dormitory of St. Andrew’s Kaggwa Girls Primary Boarding.
The fire directly affected over 200 pupils.
Borabu Sub County Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) commander Mr. Bernard Too said that his office has launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
He however did not rule out electricity fault as the cause.
“We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire but we are grateful that none of the pupils was injured,” said Too.
Students from St. Kizito Nyansiongo Boy’s School managed to contain the fire before the fire brigade from Nyamira arrived moments later.
The two schools are neighbours.
According to the school’s priest, Fr. Lawrence Mandere, the fire which broke out at around 5.40 am destroyed property of unknown value in the third floor.
The floor accommodates 150 pupils.
He said that he was awaken by screams from the pupils.
The learners rushed to salvage some of their properties from their dormitories.
“The floor was extensively destroyed and nothing was salvaged,” said Fr. Mandere.
The fire incident happened as the girls attended their morning studies.
“We have established that the girls are all safe. The fire broke out during morning studies. No child was hurt and we God for that,” added Fr. Mandere.
He urged people of good will and responsible stakeholders to chip in and help in providing the lost properties to enable keep the pupils in school.
Already, by the time of going to press, Nyamira County government had sent 70 matresses and blankets to the school.
Area Member of Parliament (M.P) Ben Momanyi was also making his way to the school to chip in through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) kitty.
Meanwhile, six pupils who sustained slight injuries and shock have been treated and discharged from the neighboring Nyansiongo Mission hospital.
