The world has always benefitted from the impact of the dedication, passion and gusto of transformational leaders determined to touch more lives and leave indelible legacies.
While we keep benefitting from their actions, we rarely appreciate them for all that they’ve done to make the world a better place.
Interestingly, in Kenya, The Open Christian University USA, in collaboration with Angaza Bible and Training Institute (ABTI), have been following up on the wonderful works of several reformers and chose to honor them in recognition of their works.
The occasion
In an auspicious occasion held in a Nairobi-based Hotel on December 14, 2023, the honorees were conferred with an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters (DHL) in diverse areas of service, ranging from leadership, advocacy, community development, agriculture, innovation, justice and peace promotion, ministry, gender violence alleviation and philanthropy, among others.

Others have been promoting road safety, building safe spaces for women and girls to thrive in leadership and entrepreneurship, poverty alleviation and promoting education, among various other engagements to transform societies.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Lister Nyamasege, National Dean of Students ABTI, a teacher and transformational leader, congratulated the honorees for standing out among many, and for having done so much worth recognition and awarding.

“In Kenya, sadly, we don’t acknowledge leaders without offices. That’s why this award is here,” she said, adding that the honorees, in all aspects, deserve the honor.
Dr. Nyamasege noted that the honorees were being awarded for their passionate commitment and sacrifice in transforming people’s lives and the communities around them.
Calling it their start of serving humanity with more vigor, she further urged them to continue offering solutions to the world’s problems and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

“I believe this is the beginning of our journey, and this recognition and event strengthens our network which we will harness and gain from,” said Dr. Joakim Oundo, a lecturer at Laikipia University, Mediation Trainer of Trainers and one of the honorees.
Dr. Tabitha Mogonchi, a seasoned educationist, mentor and Senior Principal Kereri Girls High School, expressed her joy with the recognition by The Open Christian University USA and ABTI.
“This is a memorable milestone for us all being awarded today; a moment for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor,” she said, congratulating all other honorees and appreciating them for their impact in building community.

She received an honorary DHL in Leadership and Management.
From Wyoming, USA, Dr. M. Teresa Lawrence, a transformational leader impacting the world through her non-profit, The Trueness Project, was awarded an honorary DHL in Leadership, Community Development, Justice and Advocacy.
Dr. Teresa is the Founder, President and Executive Director of The Trueness Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting honesty, integrity, and authenticity by empowering individuals and communities to live their truth and positively impact the world.

“I am on a mission to building community and spreading love, and the upcoming Grand Butterfly Gathering is one of the vehicles I am using to get funds to donate to needy children in schools and transforming communities in Kenya,” she said.
Expressing his joy, Dr. John King’oina, a seasoned mediator well-versed in mediation and conflict resolution, revealed that he has been conducting mediation sessions in diverse fields, including courts, homes and elsewhere, and contributing to enactment and implementation of peace and conflict-sensitive policies.
He received an honorary DHL in Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping.
The honorees, with their families and friends by their side to support and congratulate them, were elated to receive the doctorate award and expressed their dedication to continuous service to the community, nation and the world at large.
“This is an honor I don’t have sufficient words to explain about. I passionately love giving back to society and I am elated to be honored today for what I do,” Dr. Agnes Ntutu, First Lady Narok County, said.
She has been empowering girls and women in Narok County, and promoting sanitary hygiene among them. She was awarded an honorary DHL in Leadership, Governance and Community Development.

Dr. Paul Gachora, Advisory Council Chairperson ABTI, congratulated the honorees for their consistency in leaving permanent footprints in the areas they serve.
“Your being honored today is not an issue to do with money, but it’s all about the continuous impact you have made to the communities around you,” he observed.
On her part, Dr. Edinah Kangwana MBS, MHC., congratulated her fellow honorees for their resilience, commitment and unbeatable passion in transforming society and the world at large. Being one of the event conveners, she further thanked them for the cooperation they had registered.
A well-known change agent well-versed in the art and dynamics of leadership and governance, she was awarded an honorary DHL in Leadership and Governance.

Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Vincent Sagwe challenged the change agents to institutionalize their areas of service for maximal transformation.
Dr. Sagwe, is passionate and well-experinced in agribusiness, a believer in the transformative potential of agriculture in Kenya and the globe at large.
“Wherever you go, start an institution,” he told them, noting that the honor renews their responsibility to serve humanity.
Dr. Sagwe was honored with a doctorate for his Leadership and Innovation in Agriculture.

She is also a seasoned educationist and environmental conservationist.
Isaac Omwenga, CEO of Wakenya Pamoja Sacco, who has been championing financial literacy and leading his team in enlightening more women to get into banking, was awarded an honorary doctorate in Leadership and Management.
Aruna Varsani, honored for her efforts in Leadership, Governance and Community Development, observed that the award is a challenge for them to work harder.

The conferment was done by Prof. Kennedy Musee, Chancellor ABTI and International Accreditation Officer OCU, USA.
He congratulated them and assured them that out of the many applicants and impactful leaders out there, they had satisfied the Senate and the Board, leading to their approval to receive the honor.
Presenting them to the world as doctors of humane letters, he further urged and welcomed them to join and be part of the ABTI family, supporting its programs.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr. George Misiko, registered his hearty congratulations to the change makers and hoped the event had been a great setting for them to network, share and also publicize them to the world, equipping them for the grand works ahead.
In a written address to the honorees, Dr. Sixbert Sangwa, President of the Open Christian University, congratulated them for their commitment to continuoues learning and solving societal problems.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the faculties involved in making the occasion a success.

To the honorees, “Please embrace innovation, think critically, and foster a spirit of collaboration. The problems we face today require collective solutions that transcend borders and ideologies.
I urge you to be the agents of positive change, to be compassionate and empathetic, and to always strive for excellence in whatever you pursue,” he said.
Calling them to concerted efforts, he challenged them to join hands in their community service for maximized results.
“Remember that success is not solely measured by individual achievements but also by the impact we have on others and the world around us. As you excel in your chosen fields, consider how you can give back to society and uplift those who are less fortunate.
Be role models, mentors, and beacons of hope for others to follow,” he noted.
