For nearly five decades, Wakenya Pamoja SACCO Society Limited has evolved from a modest cooperative financial initiative serving farmers into a diversified financial institution with an increasingly ambitious national outlook.

Established in 1976 as the Union Banking Section of Kisii Farmers’ Co operative Union, the institution became autonomous in 1992 as Gusii Farmers Rural SACCO before adopting the Wakenya Pamoja identity as part of a broader strategy to expand its geographical reach and diversify its membership and financial services.

Today, that transformation is entering another important chapter.

With an asset base reported at about KSh. 2.1 billion and membership now standing at approximately 150,000, Wakenya Pamoja is positioning itself as a progressive, inclusive and member focused SACCO capable of serving farmers, professionals, entrepreneurs, young people, institutions and families across Kenya.

Its journey is particularly significant because it demonstrates what can happen when cooperative institutions combine sound governance, responsive leadership, technology and a renewed commitment to members.

From Rebuilding Confidence to Creating Opportunity

Under Chief Executive Officer Dr. Isaac Omwenga, Wakenya Pamoja has placed member confidence and institutional stability at the centre of its transformation.

The SACCO’s story of recovery and renewal was highlighted by Scholar Media Africa in 2025, when it was profiled for rebuilding trust, strengthening its operations and embracing digital solutions while exploring opportunities within the diaspora market. That transformation has continued, with the institution seeking to become more accessible and responsive to changing member needs.

“We are not interested in simply growing numbers. We want to grow confidence, participation and the economic wellbeing of our members. Every product, every process and every engagement must ultimately answer one question: how does it make the life of a member better?” Dr. Omwenga says.

The SACCO’s history provides a strong foundation for that ambition. It was among the first ten SACCOs licensed by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority to conduct deposit taking business in April 2011.

Its diversification has also been deliberate, moving beyond its original agricultural base into microfinance, value chain financing, business development financing and asset financing.

A Financial Partner for Every Generation

One of the institution’s most compelling strategies is its effort to reach beyond traditional SACCO membership.

Management recognises that many long standing members are farmers and older Kenyans, but believes the future of cooperative finance depends on bringing younger generations into the movement.

This includes encouraging parents to introduce their children to saving and investment while creating products and communication approaches that appeal to young people.

Wakenya Pamoja already has a Mwanangu Account designed for savers below 18 years, alongside ordinary savings, group accounts, business accounts, fixed deposits and other products.

Marketing Manager Christine Makinda says the SACCO is changing its marketing strategy to reach more people, particularly young Kenyans.

“We are deliberately taking the SACCO closer to the people. We want the young person, the farmer, the entrepreneur, the professional and the institution to see Wakenya Pamoja as a financial partner for every stage of life. Our message is simple: start saving today and build the future you want tomorrow,” Makinda says.

The strategy also places emphasis on educating members about updating beneficiary information. This is critical in ensuring that savings and other member assets can reach the rightful beneficiaries and reducing cases involving unclaimed assets.

Making Credit More Accessible

Credit remains one of the strongest tools through which SACCOs transform communities, and Wakenya Pamoja is seeking to make borrowing more practical and responsive.

Its portfolio includes agricultural loans, Okoa advances, business loans, institutional loans, FOSA advances and group based lending. Business loans, for example, can run for up to 24 months, while group based products support enterprises and value chain activities.

The institution is also looking at ways of reducing barriers that can discourage members from accessing credit.

Dr. Omwenga says the SACCO is focused on strengthening trust and improving access while maintaining responsible lending.

“We want members to understand that the SACCO belongs to them. Our responsibility is to make access to finance easier, faster and more transparent while ensuring that lending remains sustainable. We are working to improve loan processing so that a member does not have to wait unnecessarily long for a decision,” he says.

The SACCO’s digital channels reinforce this direction. Through mobile banking, members can access services using USSD, while M-Pesa, Visa cards, POS services and other channels provide additional convenience.

Serving Farmers While Embracing the Future

Agriculture remains central to Wakenya Pamoja’s identity. Its agricultural loans target farmers across different value chains, including coffee and tea, while other products support small businesses and groups.

But the institution is increasingly looking beyond traditional agricultural financing.

Its strategy is to help members invest, build businesses, acquire assets, educate their children and strengthen household financial security. It is also encouraging members to participate more actively in the affairs of the SACCO, provide feedback and propose ways of improving products and services.

That participatory philosophy reflects the cooperative model itself, where members are not merely customers but owners.

A Future Built on Trust

Wakenya Pamoja’s current transformation is therefore about more than numbers. It is about creating an institution that members can trust with their savings, businesses and aspirations.

Its official strategic pillars include membership and product uptake, operational efficiency and service excellence, management of non performing loans, human capital development and corporate governance.

As Wakenya Pamoja moves toward its next phase, its greatest opportunity may be its ability to combine the trust built over decades with the innovation demanded by a new generation of members.

From its agricultural roots in Kisii to its growing reach across communities, the SACCO is demonstrating that cooperative finance can remain relevant by continuously reinventing itself.

Its story is ultimately a story of people: farmers seeking better livelihoods, young people discovering the discipline of saving, entrepreneurs looking for capital, families building assets and communities investing in a more secure future.

For Wakenya Pamoja, the ambition is clear: to save together, grow together and prosper together.
