The race to unseat the North Mugirango Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Joash Nyamoko in the August 9th general election has gained momentum.

This is after a renowned career educationist Isaac Nyang’au Atebe who is the son of the constituency’s longest serving MP, Livingstone Atebe, joined the race.

Mariita served as MP between 1969-1988 and 1992-1997 before he retired.

He was the longest ever serving MP in the constituency, a record that has never been broken.

His son Atebe, who has served in the education sector for 29 years tendered his resignation to battle it out with the incumbent and several others who have also shown interest for the seat.

Until his resignation, Atebe was the County Director of Education (C.D.E.) of Kisumu County.

Addressing the media in Nyamira yesterday, Atebe said that the constituency’s education sector has been worsening in the recent past.

He said this is the sector he will prioritise when he takes over in August.

“The experience I have gained while working in the education ministry will enable me raise the standards of education in our constituency which have been lagging behind in recent years,” he said.

Atebe rose through the ranks from being a teacher to the position of county director.

On why he resigned from public service to join politics, Atebe said that he took the bold move after doing extensive consultations with his constituents for a long time.

He said the people asked him to run for the seat and after a long time of soul searching, he accepted the challenge.

“The people of North Mugirango asked me to vie in the upcoming general election and I have accepted the call by my people.

I therefore announce that I have officially resigned as Kisumu County’s director of Education and present myself to the people of my constituency for the seat of MP,” he said.

“I humbly appeal to all eligible voters of the constituency to support my bid so that I represent them in the national assembly as their MP,” added Atebe.

Political pundits opine that his entry to the already crowded race has completely changed the matrix and could overturn the fortunes of the incumbent.

Atebe rides on the rich legacy laid by his late father, which enabled him to serve for the longest period in the vast constituency.

His father is remembered to have had passion for education which saw him support many electorates to acquire it.

Among those who have indicated to wrestle out the incumbent MP Nyamoko are, Bungoma County assembly clerk Kennedy Mosongo, university don Ms. Janet Ondieki, Jason Mosinga, former MPs Charles Geni and Wilfred Ombui, Nyayiemi Moturi, Magwagwa MCA Fred Omayio and advocate Job Nyasimi.
