Tucked barely 500 meters off the Kisii–Kilgoris road near Itumbe Centre in Sameta Sub County, Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi High School is quietly but firmly etching its name among Kisii County’s most promising institutions. The mixed day and boarding County school is not only expanding in size and student population but is also positioning itself as a model of preparedness for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

CBC Preparedness: A Clear Roadmap
The Ministry of Education has already approved two CBC pathways for the school: STEM and Social Sciences. With foresight and careful planning, the leadership has ensured that facilities are in place for the pioneer Grade 10 class next year.
The school has been allocated 350 students for the CBC transition, but Senior Principal Boniface Masese emphasizes that the school can comfortably host over 600 learners. This is possible because the school currently has eight vacant classrooms, having not admitted Form Ones this year. In addition, five more will fall vacant once the current Form Fours exit, making a total of 13 classrooms available.
“Our preparedness is deliberate. We want our learners to transition into the CBC system without disruption. We have the facilities, the staff, and the resolve to support this change,” says Principal Masese.
Academic Performance: A School on the Move
Performance at Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi High School has been on a steady rise. In 2022, the school recorded a mean score of 4.2. The following year, the mean improved significantly to 5.6, and in 2024 it rose further to 6.1. This steady growth translated into better opportunities for learners, with 86 out of the 248 candidates qualifying for university placements.
This year, the school has registered 221 candidates for the KCSE examination, and the target is ambitious but clear.
“We are aiming for a mean of 7 and above,” confirms Nahashon Wafula, Deputy Principal in charge of Academics. “With discipline, determination, and hard work, our students are capable of scaling new heights.”

The school’s rising profile is evident in its demand. According to Mr. Wafula, a staggering 11,045 students selected Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi High School during the latest placement exercise, proof that parents and learners alike see it as a school of choice.
Student Population and Growth
The school currently has a total student population of 821, comprising 221 students in Form Four, 250 in Form Three, and 350 in Form Two.
With this steady growth, the leadership is prioritizing laboratories, ICT facilities, and co-curricular resources. The vision is to ensure that the school not only excels academically but also equips students with the skills and values demanded in a CBC environment.
Deputy Principal Administration, Benard Mokoro, underscores the balance between academics and mentorship:
“We are raising a generation that excels not only academically but also in character. Our focus is to produce young men and women who will lead with integrity and innovation.”

Leadership Anchored in Experience
At the heart of this transformation is Senior Principal Boniface Masese, a leader whose name resonates with excellence in Kisii County. His previous station, Igonga Boys High School in Kisii South Sub County, is testimony to his impact. When he took over Igonga, it was an ordinary school with modest outcomes. By the time he left, it had become one of the best in the region, competitive nationally, and a model for others to follow.
Now, at Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi, he is determined to replicate and surpass that success. His formula is straightforward: discipline, visionary leadership, and consistent academic focus.

The Road Ahead
The journey of Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi High School is only beginning, but the trajectory is clear. With CBC preparedness in place, a rising academic curve, and a strong leadership team, the school is carving out a name for itself as a County giant with national ambitions.
Its vision is bold yet attainable: to shape learners who excel in academics, character, and innovation. As the CBC pioneer Grade 10 class steps into the school next year, Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi is ready, not just to host them, but to set the standard for what excellence looks like in County schools.
Senior Principal Boniface Masese offers a parting shot of hope and determination: “Discipline, hard work, and integrity remain our guiding pillars. With these values, I believe every student who passes through Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi High will not only succeed academically but also become a responsible leader in society.”
