Academic Excellence

St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls High School continues to shine as a beacon of academic excellence in Kisii County and beyond. In the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, the school achieved a historic academic milestone, with 72% of its candidates—598 students—earning direct university entry. This exceptional performance is a powerful testament to the school’s unwavering commitment to holistic learning, academic rigor, and transformative education.

This record-breaking success was built on a strong academic foundation laid over the years. In the 2023 KCSE, the school maintained solid performance, with 363 out of 658 candidates attaining the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above. This translated to a 55.17% university qualification rate, with a mean score of 6.6231, reflecting the diligent effort of both students and teachers despite national challenges affecting learning.

Even earlier, in 2022, Ichuni Girls High School had already begun setting a consistent academic pace. That year, the school recorded a mean score of 7.00, with 343 out of 529 candidates qualifying for university admission—an impressive 64.96% pass rate. This solid upward trajectory highlights the institution’s sustained focus on excellence and student empowerment through quality instruction, mentorship, and value-based leadership.

“Our commitment is to nurture well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in the modern world,” says Dr. Ogeto.

Robust Infrastructure

The school’s infrastructure has seen significant enhancements to support its growing student population, which reached 3,200 in 2024. In 2025, the number stands at 2,400, a reduction attributed to the transition to the new curriculum that reduced the number of forms from four to three. Facilities include 50 well-furnished classrooms, state-of-the-art computer and science laboratories, and a modern kitchen. The school also boasts a library, a bakery, and a well-equipped administration block.

To ensure uninterrupted learning, the school has invested in a powerful generator, a borehole for water supply, and a posho mill. The transport department is well-equipped with two buses, a minibus, a pickup, and a staff van, facilitating smooth logistics for academic and extracurricular activities.

The entire school compound is beautifully laid with cabros, enhancing cleanliness, accessibility, and the institution’s aesthetic appeal.

Embracing the CBC Curriculum

In alignment with Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Ichuni Girls High School has fully prepared for the three CBC pathways. Each department is equipped with internet connectivity, and the school has established comprehensive computer labs to enhance digital literacy among students.

“Integrating technology into our teaching methodologies is paramount. It not only aligns with the CBC but also prepares our students for the digital age,” notes Dr. Ogeto.

The Director of Studies (DOS) plays a pivotal role in ensuring academic excellence by coordinating curriculum implementation, assessments, and continuous improvement strategies across all departments.

Dedicated Staff and Supportive Community

The school’s success is attributed to its dedicated team of 105 qualified teachers and 50 hardworking non-teaching staff members. The Board of Management (BOM) works tirelessly to ensure the institution’s objectives are met. Additionally, the school benefits from a supportive sponsor who provides rich spiritual nourishment, fostering a holistic learning environment.

Extracurricular Excellence

Beyond academics, Ichuni Girls High School has made significant strides in extracurricular activities. The school has invested in various sports and clubs, achieving commendable results:

  • Sports: The volleyball and table tennis teams have reached regional levels, while handball and soccer teams have excelled at the county level. The badminton team has also achieved regional recognition.
  • Athletics: Students actively participate in athletics, showcasing their talents in various competitions.
  • Science and Engineering Fair: The school’s participation at the regional level highlights its commitment to fostering innovation and scientific inquiry.
  • Chess and Basketball: These teams have made notable appearances at county-level competitions, reflecting the school’s diverse extracurricular portfolio.

These achievements underscore the school’s commitment to nurturing talents beyond the classroom.

Recognition and Future Outlook

The school’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. During the Masaba South Education Day, held at the school, Area Member of Parliament, Arch. Dr. Daniel Manduku, lauded the institution’s performance in the 2024 KCSE examinations. The event, graced by Education Cabinet Secretary Hon. Julius Ogamba, highlighted the school’s pivotal role in the region’s educational advancement.

“Ichuni Girls High School exemplifies what dedication, vision, and community support can achieve in the education sector,” remarked Dr. Manduku.

As the school continues its journey towards excellence, the focus remains on holistic development, ensuring that students are well-equipped to face the challenges of the modern world.
