Nyamira County Women representative seat could be among the most competitive in the August polls as more aspirants join the race.
The latest entrant is Dr. Emily Nyagarama Matoke, a daughter of the first governor, the late John Nyagarama.
Addressing the media in Ikonge town in North Mugirango constituency Monday, Dr. Nyagarama highlighted why she decided to run for the seat.
She said that she intends to seal the existing gaps and utilize the opportunity to propel the county to the level of other vibrant counties.
Dr. Nyagarama, 45, holds a doctorate degree in finance.
She said with the experience in finance, she will be at a better position to lobby for more funds that will help address financial related issues once at the helm.
“I feel that this is a position that requires someone who can mitigate financial related challenges facing our county.
And since this is my strength, I feel that I will be able to reach out to many organizations and through the affirmative action, we can help in assisting our people improve their livelihoods,” she said.
Some observers say her entry into politics complicates the matrix and jeopardises the re-election of the incumbent, Jerusha Momanyi.
Mrs Momanyi is determined to defend her seat.
Dr. Nyagarama played a key role in the election of his father as governor in 2013 elections and re-election in 2017.
The late governor received a stiff competition from ex-legislators Walter Nyambati (Kitutu Masaba) and Dr. James Gesami (West Mugirango) in the last election.
“What I know is I’m a firm pusher and my business once elected will be to push for Nyamira so that it can match with other top counties,” she said.
She added that she will ensure that the rights of the girl-child are protected and safeguarded.
Dr. Nyagarama declared that she will use Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party as her vehicle to the August house.
Described as a generous giver and rich by residents, she could give the incumbent a run for her money having delivered two victories for her late dad in the county’s top seat.
The incumbent enjoys the support of Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i, but she may have to go go to the drawing board to re-strategize.
Others who have joined the race to dethrone Mrs Momanyi are; Alice Chae (ex-women rep.), Nancy Onsongo, Josephine Omanwa, Anned Nyakerario, nominated Nyamira county assembly MCAs Monica Mwamba and Carol Mogere, Mary Matini among others.
